i set my screensaver to my china-photo-folder, so everytime when not touching my computer for 2 minutes, the pictures from china come up on my screen. and every now and then some pictures stand out of all the rest. this one is one of these photographs. i think it generally resembles “my style” (f.e. compare it to the old woman in budapest). not too many elements, but a lot of free space. and when you start connecting the few elements in the picture here you might associate them to a battle old vs new, tradition vs progression, maybe youth vs age in general. i especially like the young girl walking through the picture totally focused, not paying attention to anything around her, with the headphones plugged in, in contrast to the environment, where you see quite a modern building that tries to imitate the traditional style.

kunming (china), august ‘11

i had a lot of trouble with this picture, i took last summer on my trip to china. to me it’s obvious that there’s some kind of a class-warfare. the poor vs. the rich. the kid aiming for the luxurious car, while the poor in the front bent over. but this is just too simple. it’s somewhat boring and too obvious. what makes this picture interesting to me, are the different layers. you have kind of a front-layer with the poor man, then, when you go deeper, the kid sticked on the windows, while the window is also a reflecting surface, as a mirror (if you have a close look, you might also discover myself). and there’s again deeper the showroom. so this opens up a huge new space for interpretation, i didnt see at first. art is not defined through the object itsself. you cannot classify one object as art and another not. art, as i see it, is a way of looking at things. since marcel duchamp’s fountain (and later beuys etc.) everything and everybody can perceived as art or an artist, it depends on the way you look at it!

finally, i selected some pictures made on my china trip this summer and put them in a fb-album. they’re all about cities, urbanization, landscapes. maybe there’s also some “nature vs civilisation” battle in it. if you’re interested in that topic, have a look a this presentation by a chinese landscape architecture.

horizon, august ‘11

i made this picture on the flight from cairo to geneva (CH) on my way back home from china. ill post some china shots as soon as i find the time and motivation to “curate” them. this shot here made me think a bit. its actually just a horizon with ocean and sky. but the fact, that both are blue made me question why it is like this. would you recognize the difference between ocean and sky, if you wouldnt know? so i decided to turn the picture 90°, but in which direction? so which side is the sky and which the ocean? and why is it blue?

recently i went through some old pics and discovered this one. it’s been made on my hitchhiketrip last summer. something kept me staring at it and i dont know really what. there’s this frame in a frame in a frame play, thats gives it some kind of funny note, but quite common. then there’s the fact, that the main object is a window. windows usually are really symbolic. we tend to look in others home, interested in others privacy. the owners of course are aware of this, so they kept the shutter closed. but windows arent just one way transparent but both ways. so it would give the ones inside also the possibility to observe the pedestrians. and then there’s also the aspect of erosion. time is fighting back against civilisation. i love this thought about time being visible and having a will. without time there wouldnt be any change. time is the reason for a lot. fascinating, as i already blogged once.

i’m sorry i didn’t post anything in the last few months. but i want to keep this blog as kind of a gallery/portfolio of my work. so i won’t post just everything i do. anyway, we published a new issue of our psychology magazin and that for i did the new cover. the main theme was the rise of media in society, so i thought what’s the most obvious change in last few years in use of media? facebook, twitter etc.! i think especially in younger generations as i am, the use of media couldn’t be more different to older times, and i think its fascinating what new opportunities we have now. plus, i love to observe how things develop in general. 

and… i want to go to china this summer. i would love to discover a totally new culture (also with my camera) but i’m not sure yet, whether i dare to go there. i’m worrying a little about the language-barrier. any advices?

my videographic debut. i could borrow a canon 7d from a friend and did some test-shoots with domenic hänni, a good skater. first time working with premiere pro and all that stuff. hope you enjoy!

finally i got time to show some new photos. this two photos were shot for the new aware edition - a student magazine about psychology (you can download the german mag here). i did a few illustrations and the layout, i’d be happy to get some feedback.

the main-theme was, “what’s sick and what’s healthy?” in a psychological way. so i borrowed an old psycho-jacket from the theater, searched an actress and we did a cool shooting at home and in the trainstation. the portrait, i chose because of its dynamic (it’s really just this moment), her expression (there’s kind of a dissonance between her mouth area and her eyes, looks like she’s in kind of a battle with herself) and her sharp hair, which is twisted and thrown up in every direction.

the photo in the trainstation was quite fun to make. she stood still for a few minutes while i was trying to get as much people around her as possible, but not in front of her. it should represent the fact, that the difference between sick and healthy has often no objective reason but is much more depending on what is accepted in society.
